Things to consider about direct payments

You will need to do your homework to make sure that direct payments are best for you – here are some tips.

If you decide to hire your own care worker, who could also be a relative or friend, or employ a care agency to send care workers to your home, their contract is with you and not the council.

Remember to read all contracts very carefully to make sure you are really getting the care service you need and there are no hidden charges.

Also, if you employ someone as a care worker and become their employer, you should know your obligations in law as an employer.

Don’t be put off by this though. Your local direct payments or independent living support scheme will advise you about contracts and other things you need to know as an employer.

Remember: you are the customer

If you are paying for your own care, make sure you get a good deal for your money.

Be careful about letting others pay for things on your behalf, or if they ask you for large lump-sum payments up front. Don’t be afraid to question them and find out exactly what the money is for.

Don’t feel uncomfortable talking about money. Remember that you are the customer in this relationship and it is the job of the care provider to serve you.

You should feel confident that your money is getting you the care that you really want and need.
